PNP probes alleged kill plot on Cebu governor

The Philippine National Police (PNP) has launched an investigation into a reported plot to assassinate Cebu Governor Pamela “Pam” Baricuatro.

In an official statement released Sunday, PNP Chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. confirmed that the Police Regional Office in Central Visayas (PRO-7) is currently validating intelligence reports regarding a threat to the life of the provincial executive.

“We have already mobilized our regional personnel not only to step up the security measures but also to identify and run after all those behind this threat,” said Nartatez.

The directive follows intelligence suggesting a potential attempt to “neutralize” Baricuatro, who took office in June 2025.

Nartatez said the PNP is treating the information with high priority to ensure the safety of the governor and the stability of the province.

As a result of the threat, the governor’s security detail has been augmented with additional personnel from the regional headquarters.

The PNP is also working to trace the origin of the reports to determine if they are linked to any

specific groups or individuals.

Baricuatro, who succeeded Gwendolyn Garcia as governor of Cebu after a landslide victory in the 2025 midterm elections, has not issued a personal statement.

However, provincial officials confirmed they are in close coordination with national police units to address the security concerns.
