The Philippine National Police (PNP) has placed its units on heightened alert following reports of a United States military operation in Venezuela.
Acting PNP chief Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said officers are closely monitoring the US Embassy and other sensitive locations for any potential demonstrations.
Police units in Metro Manila and other major urban centers have been instructed to remain on standby to respond quickly if protests arise.
“We are prepared for any protest action and similar activities. Our units are keeping a close watch on developments and are ready to respond if needed,” Nartatez said on Monday.
Additional personnel have been deployed to strategic areas to maintain order and prevent any possible disturbances around critical sites.
While no confirmed protests have been reported so far, authorities anticipate that some groups may organize demonstrations in reaction to the situation in Venezuela.
Local police have been directed to coordinate with barangay officials and local government units, while intelligence teams continue monitoring social media and public forums for any planned protest activity.
The heightened alert follows reports that the US conducted a military operation on January 3 targeting criminal networks in Venezuela. Some reports claimed that President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, were taken to New York to face charges, prompting calls from Philippine lawmakers and groups for the government to respond.
