PNP heightens watch for Sara impeachment trial

The Philippine National Police said it has stepped up security monitoring ahead of the Senate impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte.

PNP chief Gen. Jose Nartatez said Monday that authorities had not detected any specific or credible threat directly linked to the proceedings.

Still, he said police units were maintaining heightened monitoring and close coordination with intelligence and operational teams to respond to any concern that may arise.

Nartatez said the PNP’s monitoring also covered possible extremist activity, public disturbances, and misinformation campaigns that could trigger violence.

Duterte is scheduled to face trial before the Senate impeachment court starting July 6.

The Vice President faces allegations involving misuse of public funds, unexplained wealth, bribery of Department of Education officials, and threats against President Marcos.

Nartatez said the PNP already had protocols for securing major government events and was ready to coordinate with the Senate and other agencies to keep the proceedings safe, peaceful, and free from disruption.

He also urged the public to remain calm, respect the rule of law, and exercise their rights peacefully, while assuring that the PNP would remain impartial in protecting public safety and constitutional freedoms.
