President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. reminded Iglesia ni Cristo members who joined Tuesday’s rally at the Edsa People Power Monument that public protests do not clear a person facing a pending case.
Palace Press Officer Claire Castro relayed the President’s message as INC members gathered in support of Sen. Rodante Marcoleta.
Marcoleta is expected to face a nonbailable plunder case before the Sandiganbayan this week over an alleged Php 75 million campaign donation issue.
Castro said Marcos recognized the concerns raised by the protesters, including their calls for transparency, accountability, and enforcement of the law.
She said, however, that acquittal happens in court and cannot be obtained through street demonstrations.
Castro also said the President appealed to protesters not to allow their gathering to disrupt the lives of other Filipinos affected by the rally.
INC spokesperson Edwil Zabala, in a media interview, criticized what he described as selective justice and said the group would continue demanding justice for Filipinos allegedly wronged by corruption.
The rally was held after Ombudsman Jesus Crispin Remulla said his office was set to file a plunder case against Marcoleta before the Sandiganbayan in connection with the alleged campaign donation case.
