PH Justice Department Asks SC to Dismiss Petitions Seeking Duterte’s Return to ICC

The Philippine Department of Justice (DOJ) has urged the Supreme Court to reject petitions questioning the arrest of former President Rodrigo Duterte and seeking his return to the International Criminal Court (ICC).

This development follows Solicitor General Menardo Guevara’s decision not to defend the government’s position on the legal challenge. In response, the DOJ has stepped in to assert that Duterte’s arrest was lawful and that there is no basis for reinstating ICC jurisdiction over him.

The Supreme Court’s ruling on the petitions could have significant legal and political implications, as the case continues to unfold.
