A 33-year-old man was arrested after allegedly being caught making an illegal connection to a Meralco power line in Barangay San Vicente, San Pedro, Laguna, on Thursday, October 22.
Authorities apprehended the suspect, a resident of the barangay, following a report of electricity theft received by Meralco and the Philippine National Police (PNP). Pliers and other tools allegedly used to install the unauthorized connection, commonly called a “jumper,” were recovered from him.
The suspect faces charges under Republic Act No. 7832, or the Anti-Electricity Pilferage Act, which carries penalties that include imprisonment and fines upon conviction.
Following the arrest, Meralco renewed its appeal to the public to report suspected illegal connections to help protect communities and maintain reliable electricity service. The company also reminded customers that stealing electricity and equipment used to deliver power is prohibited by law.
“Our campaign against electricity theft continues in partnership with the PNP. We also urge the public to immediately report incidents of electricity theft or illegal connections for everyone’s safety,” said Joe R. Zaldarriaga, Meralco vice president and head of corporate communications.
Customers may report suspected electricity theft and other service concerns through the MyMeralco app, Meralco’s official Facebook page, or its X account, @meralco. Reports may also be sent by text to 09209716211 or 09175516211, or through the Meralco hotline at 16211.
