The Philippine government on Sunday called for a peaceful resolution to the escalating crisis in Venezuela following a reported U.S. military operation that targeted the South American nation’s leadership.
In a statement issued January 4, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) expressed concern over the “evolving situation” and urged all parties involved to exercise maximum restraint to prevent further conflict.
“The Philippines urges concerned parties to resolve disputes through peaceful means, and to exercise restraint to prevent escalation of conflict,” the DFA said.
The diplomatic appeal comes in the wake of claims by U.S. President Donald Trump that a strike successfully removed Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro from power.
While the U.S. has signaled intent to oversee a transition in the country, Maduro has reportedly denied the claims of his capture and accused Washington of seeking control over Venezuela’s oil reserves.
Assistance for Filipinos
DFA spokesperson Angelica Escalona confirmed that the Philippine Embassy in Bogotá, Colombia—which holds jurisdiction over Venezuela—has issued a travel and safety advisory for the Filipino community.
According to DFA records, there are currently 74 Filipinos residing in Venezuela.
“The Philippine Embassy in Bogotá… stands ready to provide assistance to them, as necessary and appropriate, to keep them out of harm’s way,” the department stated.
Filipinos in the region are advised to stay alert, monitor local news, and maintain a list of emergency contacts.
