President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on Wednesday expressed condolences to the victims of the magnitude 6.9 earthquake that struck Cebu on Tuesday night.
“Buong puso akong nakikiramay sa mga pamilyang nawalan ng mahal sa buhay, at kasama sa aking mga dasal ang kaligtasan ng mga nasugatan at lahat ng naapektuhan ng lindol,” he said.
Marcos assured that Cabinet officials are already in affected areas to provide assistance and assess damage. “Nasa mga apektadong lugar na po ang ating mga Kalihim upang magbigay ng tulong at suriin ang pinsala mula sa lindol at mga aftershock,” he added.
The President urged the public to remain alert and follow advisories from local governments. He said the Office of the Civil Defense and NDRRMC are coordinating all response efforts.
Government agencies are also mobilized: the DPWH is assessing roads and bridges, DOE is restoring power, DOH has deployed medical teams, and DSWD is delivering aid. The BFP is assisting in search and rescue, while the PNP is maintaining order.
“Sama-sama nating itatawid ang ating mga kababayan at muling itatayo ang mga komunidad na naapektuhan,” Marcos said.
The earthquake, initially measured at magnitude 6.7 before being upgraded to 6.9, struck at 9:59 p.m. on Sept. 30 with its epicenter 21 km northeast of Bogo City, Cebu, according to PHIVOLCS.
