Malacañang has urged the public to exercise extra caution as El Niño conditions could increase the risk of forest fires and other heat-related hazards across the country.
During a Palace press briefing, Civil Defense Undersecretary Harold Cabreros said the government is closely monitoring the cascading effects of extreme heat, including the possibility of more forest fires during the dry season.
“One of which, ang nakikita natin ay magkakaroon ng increase ng forest fires,” Cabreros said.
He called on the public to cooperate with government conservation efforts, particularly in the responsible use of water and energy, while also taking precautions to prevent fires in communities and forested areas.
Cabreros said forest fires could damage both natural resources and agricultural areas, underscoring the need for stronger public awareness and preparedness.
He added that El Niño could also affect health, food production and energy supply, making coordinated government action and public cooperation critical in reducing its impact.
The government continues to monitor conditions and coordinate with concerned agencies as preparations for the possible effects of El Niño intensify.
