MANILA – Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. has directed security forces and law enforcement agencies to intensify operations against lawless elements and the illegal drug trade following an ambush in Tipo-Tipo, Basilan that wounded at least 13 government troops.

Teodoro issued the directive during a visit to the 1101st Infantry Brigade headquarters at Camp Luis Biel II in Barangay Tabiawan, Isabela City, according to the Department of National Defense.

During a security briefing with Armed Forces of the Philippines chief Gen. Antonio Nafarrete and officials of the 11th Infantry Division and Western Mindanao Command, Teodoro stressed that the illegal drug trade should also be treated as a national security concern because of the resources used to sustain illicit activities.

He also ordered officials to improve coordination and operational and administrative cooperation within their respective areas.

At the same time, Teodoro emphasized that law enforcement operations must remain consistent with the Bangsamoro peace process and ongoing decommissioning efforts.

After the briefing, Teodoro and AFP officials visited the soldiers wounded in the Basilan ambush at Camp Navarro General Hospital in Zamboanga City.

The defense chief personally checked on the troops and awarded them the Wounded Personnel Medal in recognition of their service and sacrifice.
