A FUTURE POWERED BY PURPOSE AND INCLUSION. Meralco Chairman Manuel V. Pangilinan underscores One Meralco’s call for a sustainable future powered with purpose, as Department of Energy Secretary Sharon S. Garin highlights the government’s vision for a climate-resilient energy system grounded on accessibility, reliability, and clean energy.

In a strong display of vision and unity, the top leaders and partners of the Manila Electric Company (Meralco) reaffirmed their shared commitment to a long-term sustainability roadmap—one anchored on a just, orderly, and affordable transition to cleaner energy that uplifts communities and improves the lives of millions of Filipinos.

The event, Horizons: One Meralco Long-term Sustainability Strategy Summit, was headlined by Meralco Chairman and CEO Manuel V. Pangilinan and Department of Energy Secretary Sharon S. Garin. The summit also featured strategic insights from senior executives of Meralco, Meralco PowerGen Corporation (MGEN), and One Meralco Foundation (OMF). For One Meralco, it marked a defining moment in its collective journey toward a more climate-resilient and life-affirming energy future.

In his keynote remarks, Pangilinan underscored that One Meralco’s sustainability agenda is guided by balance, equity, and impact—not just ambition. He described the Group’s long-term strategy as a dual commitment to a cleaner planet and a more prosperous people.

“If there is a carbon-free future, there must also be a poverty-free future. Strategy means little if the power it delivers is not within reach of the people who need it most. Every watt we deliver must carry not just power, but purpose,” Pangilinan said.

He called for synergy across industries and institutions to achieve a truly inclusive energy transition, adding, “No one builds the future alone.”

STRATEGY, SCALE, AND SOCIAL IMPACT. From left to right: Meralco Chief Sustainability Officer and Movem President and CEO Raymond B. Ravelo, MGEN President and CEO Emmanuel V. Rubio, and Meralco Chief CSR Officer and One Meralco Foundation President Jeffrey O. Tarayao articulate One Meralco’s Long-term Sustainability Strategy—a just, orderly, and affordable transition to cleaner energy spanning three decades, centered on uplifting lives and transforming communities.

Energy Secretary Garin, meanwhile, offered a clear-eyed assessment of the nation’s energy landscape, acknowledging that coal still comprises 62.5% of the country’s generation mix. She emphasized, however, the urgency of accelerating renewable energy development to meet the government’s targets of 35% renewables by 2030, 50% by 2040, and beyond 50% by 2050. These goals, she noted, will be supported by initiatives such as microgrids, hybridized supply systems for underserved areas, and green transmission networks.

“The energy transition is not just about replacing fuels—it’s about transforming futures. It must be inclusive, resilient, and rooted in the lived realities of our people. We are building a system that powers not only homes and industries, but also hope, dignity, and opportunity,” Garin said.

Meralco Chief Sustainability Officer and Movem President and CEO Raymond B. Ravelo reaffirmed One Meralco’s commitment to its overarching sustainability agenda, Powering the Good Life. “We have made a deliberate choice—to place sustainable, life-giving action at the heart of everything we do. Not as a side initiative, not merely as a corporate obligation, but as a pledge to our people, to our planet, and to prosperity,” he said.

Ravelo outlined One Meralco’s Long-term Sustainability Strategy—a three-horizon roadmap to 2050 that begins with scaling renewable energy investments while preparing for frontier technologies such as nuclear, hydrogen, biomass, and carbon capture.

At the heart of this plan are MGEN’s initiatives, including MTerra Solar—the world’s largest integrated solar and battery project. Once operational, it will energize about 2.4 million households and help avoid an estimated 4.3 million tons of emissions annually.

“Our long-term commitment is to phase out coal by 2050. But during this transition, coal remains necessary to bridge the gap—used responsibly and strategically—to ensure that as we shift to cleaner sources, we do not compromise reliability and affordability,” said MGEN President and CEO Emmanuel V. Rubio. He noted that MGEN’s mission aligns with addressing the energy trilemma: delivering power that is affordable, reliable, and sustainable.

Meanwhile, Meralco Chief CSR Officer and OMF President Jeffrey O. Tarayao emphasized the importance of extending electricity access to unserved and underserved communities through the energization of schools, health centers, farms, and water systems.

“These are not just projects—they are lifelines. They bridge poverty and productivity, exclusion and empowerment. As One Meralco moves toward a greener grid, we are equally committed to ensuring that no Filipino is left behind. Because sustainability is not just about carbon—it’s also about compassion,” Tarayao said.

Pangilinan concluded by underscoring that true progress lies in collaboration. “Power alone is not enough. True compassion requires a totality of solutions—where foundations, corporations, and partners work together to extend the benefits of technology, connectivity, and resilience to the poorest and most vulnerable,” he said.
