Occidental Mindoro feels early morning tremor

A magnitude 3.2 earthquake shakes areas near Abra de Ilog in Occidental Mindoro early Monday.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reports the quake struck at 5:59 a.m., with an epicenter 11 kilometers northwest of Abra de Ilog at a depth of 111 kilometers.

Phivolcs says the tremor is tectonic in origin and expects no damage.

The small quake comes hours after a stronger magnitude 4.8 earthquake hit parts of Batangas and Mindoro shortly after midnight Sunday.

According to Phivolcs’ bulletin, the 4.8-magnitude tremor occurred at 12:04 a.m. with an epicenter 18 kilometers northwest of Calatagan, Batangas, at a depth of 118 kilometers. It was also tectonic in origin.

Instrumental Intensity II is recorded in Batangas City, Cuenca, and Tagaytay City, as well as in Mamburao, Occidental Mindoro, and Puerto Galera, Oriental Mindoro. Intensity I is logged in Abucay, Bataan, and Calapan City, Oriental Mindoro. Phivolcs reports no expected damage.

Three minor quakes follow Sunday evening. A magnitude 1.6 tremor strikes 11 kilometers east of Looc, Occidental Mindoro, at 8:30 p.m. Another magnitude 1.9 quake hits 18 kilometers southwest of Calatagan at 9:09 p.m., and a 1.6 tremor occurs 26 kilometers northeast of Looc at 9:20 p.m.

State seismologists continue monitoring the area and urge residents to stay alert for possible aftershocks.
