Defending champion National University stormed into the UAAP Season 88 women’s basketball Final Four after thrashing De La Salle University, 97-67, on Sunday at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
Karl Ann Pingol delivered a masterclass, recording the tournament’s first triple-double with 12 points, 11 rebounds, and 11 assists as NU sealed its 11th straight semifinal appearance since Season 76. The Lady Bulldogs’ dynasty, which began under coach Pat Aquino and produced eight championships from 2014 to 2019, remains alive and roaring.
Playing in her final season, Pingol credited her teammates for her milestone performance. “I didn’t even know my stats until they told me. It’s really all them—they made me look good out there. I need them as much as they need me,” said the Season 87 Mythical Team member.
Now mentored by coach DA Olan, the Lady Bulldogs extended their winning streak to eight for a 9-1 record, trailing only unbeaten University of Santo Tomas (9-0). “I challenged them to share the ball more, and I’m proud of the 37 assists we tallied. It shows how much this team plays for one another,” Olan said.
Kristine Cayabyab led NU’s scoring with 20 points, five rebounds, three assists, and three steals, while Aloha Betanio chipped in 18 points, six assists, and five boards. Angel Surada, Dindy Medina, and Marga Villanueva added double-digit performances in the rout that saw the Lady Bulldogs lead 50-36 at the half.
La Salle’s Kyla Go fought valiantly with 21 points, while Kyla Sunga and Paulina Anastacio each had 10, but the Lady Archers slid to 3-6, tied with Adamson University in fifth place.
NU aims to tighten its hold on the No. 2 spot when it faces Adamson on November 8 at the UST Quadricentennial Pavilion, while La Salle looks to bounce back against Ateneo de Manila University on November 9 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
