NLEX is proving that discipline and smart basketball can go a long way. Playing within its limits has become the team’s guiding principle in the PBA Philippine Cup, and the results speak for themselves.

The Road Warriors are now chasing a third consecutive victory as they face the hungry Blackwater Bossing on Wednesday at the Ynares Center in Antipolo.

Blackwater, coming off two straight losses, is eager to bounce back and even its record at 2-2 to stay in playoff contention. But standing in its way is an NLEX squad on a roll, determined to maintain at least a share of the top spot with a 4-1 record.

For coach Jong Uichico, the formula remains simple: stay disciplined, defend hard, and know the team’s strengths.

“We can’t outscore teams. That’s not who we are,” Uichico said after their gritty 89-85 win over Meralco last Sunday. “You have to know what your team can and cannot do offensively, and then defend the best way you can. Hopefully, your game plan works.”

“My vision for NLEX is for us to compete with the strong teams. If we compete every game, the results will take care of themselves,” he added.

NLEX’s defense has been the foundation of its success. The Road Warriors have held opponents to an average of 86.75 points per game, a full 14 points fewer than what Blackwater usually gives up. While NLEX averages only 88 points per outing—13 less than Blackwater’s offensive output—it has been their grit and poise in close games that have made the difference.

Anchoring the charge are Kevin Alas, Robert Bolick, and JB Bahio, all playing steady and confident basketball. Meanwhile, Blackwater’s chances could hinge on the health of RK Ilagan, who remains doubtful due to injury. That leaves much of the offensive burden to Sedrick Barefield and Christian David.

If NLEX continues to play to its strengths—tough defense, disciplined execution, and mental fortitude—it could very well stretch its winning streak to three and tighten its grip on the Philippine Cup leaderboard.
