Negros Oriental recognized persons with disabilities for their contributions to their communities during the observance of National Disability Rights Day on Friday.
Gov. Manuel Sagarbarria praised PWDs for their resilience and determination, saying they continued to inspire others despite the challenges they faced.
He said disability should not prevent anyone from pursuing goals, taking part in community life and contributing to society.
Sagarbarria also announced plans to launch a Governor’s Cup for PWDs beginning next year.
Under the proposed program, local government units will hold qualifying competitions in selected sports and games, with winners advancing to a provincial championship in Dumaguete City.
The championship is expected to coincide with the completion of rehabilitation work at the Macias Sports Complex, including its oval.
Around 300 PWDs from different parts of the province also received five kilograms of rice each through the Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office.
The event also featured family games, free massage services, haircuts and other activities aimed at promoting inclusion and recognizing the rights and contributions of persons with disabilities.
