More than 64,000 families across four regions have been affected by Tropical Storm Basyang (international name: Penha), which has now weakened into a low pressure area (LPA), the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) reported on Saturday.
In its latest situational update released at 5 a.m., the NDRRMC confirmed that 64,360 families—totaling approximately 232,550 individuals—have been impacted.
The affected residents are spread across 517 villages in Western Visayas (Region 6), Central Visayas (Region 7), the Negros Island Region, and Caraga.
As of Saturday morning, 16,528 families remain in 480 government evacuation centers, while another 4,489 families are receiving assistance outside of official shelters.
The Office of Civil Defense (OCD) defines “affected families” as those displaced by the weather disturbance as well as those who remained in their homes but required some form of assistance.
The storm’s impact on transportation remains significant. Operations at 82 seaports in Mimaropa, Western Visayas, Negros Island, and Caraga were suspended due to rough sea conditions.
The suspension has left 4,447 passengers, 1,481 rolling cargoes, 111 vessels, and 20 motorbancas stranded.
While Basyang has been downgraded to an LPA, local disaster units remain on alert for potential secondary hazards like flooding and landslides in saturated areas.
The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) continues to distribute food packs and modular tents to displaced residents and stranded travelers.
