The National Commission on Indigenous Peoples (NCIP) in Bukidnon called for greater awareness of cultural practices following a controversy at the Kaamulan Festival in Cagayan de Oro City.

The agency said indigenous cultural symbols must be treated with respect and not reduced to decorative or commercial items.

NCIP Bukidnon officer Ronaldo Baya-on said the IP community expressed disappointment over the use of cultural items without regard for their meaning.

He stressed that indigenous symbols represent identity and history and should not be used for entertainment or profit.

The issue stemmed from reports that indigenous costumes and accessories were used as decorations on lechon displays during an event on April 16.

The Kaamulan Festival, which brings together seven Bukidnon tribes, features cultural expressions considered sacred by indigenous communities.

The NCIP urged event organizers and stakeholders to exercise cultural sensitivity as the festival continues to attract wider commercial participation.
