President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. appointed Lt. Gen. Antonio Nafarrete to lead the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), the Department of National Defense (DND) said Tuesday.
Nafarrete will replace Gen. Romeo Brawner Jr., who is retiring after completing his term as AFP chief of staff.
The defense department announced the leadership change hours before the scheduled change of command and retirement ceremony at Camp General Emilio Aguinaldo in Quezon City.
Nafarrete had been serving as commanding general of the Philippine Army before his appointment to the military’s top post.
He is set to become the 61st chief of staff of the Armed Forces.
The DND also announced that Lt. Gen. Donald Gumiran would take over as commanding general of the Philippine Army.
Gumiran had been serving as commander of the Western Mindanao Command before being tapped to succeed Nafarrete.
The formal turnover of leadership is scheduled during the military ceremony at Camp Aguinaldo on Tuesday.
