The Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) reported that most ports remain unaffected and fully operational following a series of earthquakes that struck various parts of the country since Monday.
In a situation report released Friday, the PPA noted that only the Liloan Municipal Port in Southern Leyte is currently closed. Large cracks discovered at the port prompted its closure, and the Terminal Management Office (TMO)—Liloan secured the area.
The Liloan Municipal Port, primarily used by cargo vessels, sustained damage from a magnitude 5.8 earthquake that hit Southern Leyte at 7:39 a.m. on Thursday. According to the Port Management Office (PMO) of Eastern Leyte/Samar, the quake caused Intensity V tremors at the Liloan Municipal Port, Liloan Ferry Terminal, Port of San Ricardo, and Port of San Juan. Intensity IV was recorded at the Port of Sogod, while Intensity III was felt at the Port of Tacloban.
In Batangas, the PMO reported a magnitude 5.4 earthquake centered in Calatagan at 6:48 p.m. on Monday. Fortunately, no damage was recorded at the Calatagan and Batangas ports. Operations at both ports resumed at 6:55 p.m. following safety inspections.
In Mindoro, a magnitude 2.6 earthquake struck TMO Lubang, but the PMO confirmed no damage was reported.
Similarly, PMO Surigao noted a magnitude 5.0 earthquake in General Luna, Surigao del Norte, on Wednesday evening, followed by a magnitude 5.7 earthquake near Leyte province on Thursday. No damage was reported at PPA ports within the region.
In Misamis Occidental, PMO Ozamiz recorded an earthquake at 11:41 a.m. on Thursday. The port’s early warning device and seismic accelerograph intensity meter detected the quake, prompting the safe evacuation of all passengers and employees as part of standard emergency procedures.
Following inspections by the PMO’s Engineering Services Division, all structures and facilities at the Ozamiz Port were declared safe.
Operations resumed immediately after the inspections.
Despite minor disruptions in certain areas, the PPA assured the public that port operations nationwide remain primarily unaffected and that safety measures are in place to ensure the well-being of passengers and employees.
