MANILA, Philippines — The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has officially turned over 15 brand-new Mobile Material Recovery Facility (MMRF) trucks to local government units (LGUs) across Metro Manila to strengthen solid waste management and promote recycling at the community level.
MMDA Chairman Don Artes said the initiative aims to reduce waste generation by encouraging residents to participate in proper waste segregation and recycling through programs implemented by their respective local governments.
The beneficiaries include Caloocan, Las Piñas, Malabon, Mandaluyong, Manila, Marikina, Muntinlupa, Navotas, Parañaque, Pasay, Pasig, San Juan, Taguig, Valenzuela, and the municipality of Pateros.
Under the MMDA’s “Recyclable Mo, Palit Grocery Ko” program, residents can exchange recyclable materials, including plastic, bottles, paper, and cardboard, for essential household goods such as canned food, instant noodles, coffee, and soap.
The program seeks to encourage households to collect and properly segregate recyclable waste instead of disposing of materials that can still be recovered and reused.
Each MMRF truck comes with an initial three-month supply of grocery items and other incentive goods to support the program’s implementation in participating LGUs and barangays.
According to the MMDA, the mobile facilities will help bring recycling services closer to communities while providing residents with practical incentives to adopt environmentally responsible waste disposal practices.
The recipient LGUs expressed appreciation for the MMDA’s continued assistance in improving local waste management systems and promoting a cleaner, more sustainable Metro Manila.
The distribution of MMRF trucks forms part of Component 2 of the Metro Manila Flood Management Project Phase 1 (MMFMP-P1), which includes initiatives to improve solid waste management and help prevent garbage from clogging waterways and drainage systems.
Through the program, the MMDA aims to strengthen cooperation with local governments in reducing waste, encouraging recycling, and supporting flood mitigation efforts across the National Capital Region.
