After four Oscar nominations and decades of redefining action cinema, Tom Cruise is finally getting his golden moment. The Hollywood icon will receive an honorary Oscar at the 2025 Governors Awards this November for his commitment to filmmaking, theatrical releases and stunt work.
This recognition is a culmination of a legacy built on decades of high-octane storytelling. At 62, Cruise has long been a symbol of blockbuster bravado—from Top Gun to Mission: Impossible. Yet this award is not just about box office numbers. It is about his unshakable belief in the power of big screens in theatrical cinema, championing big screen storytelling even during the pandemic.
More importantly, it celebrates his deep-rooted belief in cinematic storytelling. Academy president Janet Yang praised Cruise’s dedication, stating, “Tom Cruise’s incredible commitment to our filmmaking community, to the theatrical experience, and to the stunts community has inspired us all.”
The Governors Awards, often referred to as the Oscars’ more intimate cousin, will also honor choreographer Debbie Allen and production designer Wynn Thomas. Country music legend Dolly Parton will receive the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award for her decades of charitable work.
“This year’s Governors Awards will celebrate four legendary individuals whose extraordinary careers and commitment to our filmmaking community continue to leave a lasting impact,” Yang said in a statement.
Set for November 16 at the Ray Dolby Ballroom in Los Angeles, the 2025 Governors Awards will mark a night of celebration, legacy, and long-awaited recognition.
