STRENGTHENING ENERGY INFRASTRUCTURE. Manila Electric Company (Meralco) is committed to delivering reliable, resilient, and future-ready electricity service to its growing customer base through continuous infrastructure upgrades. In photo is the recently upgraded Abubot Substation, where Meralco installed three 115-kilovolt (kV) breakers and associated equipment to improve service reliability and operational flexibility in Dasmariñas, General Trias and Imus in Cavite.
The Manila Electric Company (Meralco), led by Manuel V. Pangilinan, marked another milestone in the second quarter of 2025 by energizing nine major capital expenditure projects designed to deliver stable, reliable, and future-ready electricity service to millions of customers.
These projects, strategically located in key growth areas of Metro Manila, Bulacan, Laguna, and Quezon, underscore Meralco’s commitment to meeting the nation’s rising energy needs while ensuring top-notch service, operational flexibility, and resilience against extreme weather events.
“Meralco’s investments are all about anticipating the needs of tomorrow,” said Froilan J. Savet, First Vice President and Head of Networks. “We’re building an energy infrastructure that is not only robust today but also adaptable for the demands of the future.”
Boosting capacity and serving economic hubs
Between April and June 2025, Meralco commissioned projects that added an impressive 450 megavolt-amperes (MVA) of capacity—bolstering electricity supply in the thriving cities of Makati, Pasig, Parañaque, and Quezon, as well as fast-growing municipalities in Laguna and Quezon.
Among these is the state-of-the-art ASEANA 115 kV – 34.5 kV Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) Substation in Parañaque City, now powering major commercial and hospitality centers such as Ayala Malls Manila Bay, Seda Manila Bay, and Uni-Asia International Prime Holdings.
Upgrades to the Bridgetowne and Makati GIS Substations ensure uninterrupted electricity to high-demand business districts, serving landmark developments like Giga Tower, Opus Mall, Cash & Carry Mall, and St. Clare’s Medical Center.
In Southern Luzon, the Tayabas Power Transformer’s capacity was tripled—from 100 MVA to 300 MVA—securing a stronger power supply for key communities in Quezon and Laguna provinces.
Enhancing grid reliability and supporting national projects
Five other major projects targeted Meralco’s sub-transmission backbone, boosting power reliability across its franchise area.
The upgraded Dila-Real 115 kV line now supports a wider service area in Laguna, while newly energized lines in Bulacan—the Malolos-Tabang and Malolos-Calumpit 69 kV—are powering up not just communities but also the Department of Transportation’s North-South Commuter Railway, a critical infrastructure project for the nation.
Meralco also debuted its first fully indoor GIS switching station in Regalado, Quezon City, enhancing flexibility and service reliability for critical operations, including ST Telemedia Global Data Centers.
In Cavite, the Abubot Substation upgrade now delivers improved capacity to educational, healthcare, and industrial customers, including De La Salle University Medical Center, Emilio Aguinaldo College, and San Miguel Yamamura.
Commitment to powering progress
All nine projects are part of Meralco’s long-term modernization strategy—one that ensures uninterrupted, high-quality electricity for households, industries, and essential services.
“These investments are more than just infrastructure upgrades—they are an investment in people, communities, and economic growth,” Savet emphasized. “As the country grows, Meralco will be there every step of the way, powering progress with a network built to last.”
