With the southwest monsoon (Habagat) bringing heavy rains and possible flooding, the Manila Electric Company (Meralco) assured the public that its crews are on standby to respond quickly to power-related emergencies.
The company said it is closely monitoring weather advisories and coordinating with authorities to ensure timely action, particularly in areas vulnerable to floods.
“Meralco is reminding customers to put safety first, especially with the increased threat of flooding which heightens the risk of electrical accidents,” said Joe R. Zaldarriaga, Meralco Vice President and Head of Corporate Communications.
Meralco urged customers to cut power immediately by switching off the main breaker if floodwaters start entering their homes. The company also issued safety reminders:
- Do not touch circuit breakers, outlets, or fuses with wet hands or while standing on wet ground.
- Unplug appliances and turn off permanently connected equipment. Remove light bulbs if possible.
- Steer clear of dangling or exposed wires.
- After floodwaters subside, call a licensed electrician to inspect your system before restoring power.
