Manila Electric Company (Meralco), led by Manuel V. Pangilinan, has forged a strategic partnership with the United Professional Electrical Engineers of the Philippines, Inc. (UPEEP) to strengthen professional and technical excellence in the country’s electrical engineering sector.

The collaboration, formalized through a memorandum of understanding (MOU), underscores a shared commitment to developing highly skilled electrical engineering professionals equipped to meet the evolving demands of the Philippine energy industry.

Through the partnership, Meralco and UPEEP will work together on capability-building initiatives, advanced technical research, and innovation programs aimed at enhancing the competencies of electrical engineers nationwide. The agreement also supports efforts to strengthen industry standards for solar and battery energy storage installations while helping build technical expertise in emerging energy technologies, including nuclear power.

Leading the signing ceremony were Meralco Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Ronnie L. Aperocho, Meralco Senior Vice President and Head of Distribution Utility Subsidiaries and Strategic Partnerships Ferdinand O. Geluz, UPEEP National President Jovenie F. Tagatac, and UPEEP National Vice President for External Affairs Mark Anjelo U. Estrada.

As part of the partnership, both organizations will jointly roll out technical training programs, establish knowledge-sharing platforms, collaborate on cutting-edge research initiatives, and develop strategies aligned with the country’s roadmap for energy efficiency, sustainability, and energy security.

“For UPEEP, joining hands with Meralco is a dynamic alliance. Through this MOU, we are successfully blending high-level institutional capability with the hands-on expertise of our professional electrical engineers,” said UPEEP National President Jovenie F. Tagatac.

The partnership comes at a pivotal time as the Philippine energy sector continues to evolve, creating greater demand for highly trained professionals capable of driving innovation across traditional and emerging energy technologies.

For Meralco, investing in people and technical excellence remains central to its vision of building a future-ready energy industry that supports the country’s sustainable development goals.

“At Meralco, we firmly believe that the future of our industry will be shaped not only by technology, but by the capabilities of our people. This collaboration reflects our shared commitment to advancing the electrical engineering profession, strengthening technical excellence, and contributing to a safer, more innovative, and future-ready energy sector for the Philippines,” said Meralco COO Ronnie L. Aperocho.

Through initiatives that champion professional development and industry collaboration, Meralco continues to play an active role in advancing innovation and supporting nation-building efforts in the Philippine energy sector.
