Marikina City opens recreational park after major rehab

Marikina City officials led the formal inauguration of a newly rehabilitated recreational park on Thursday, marking the completion of a project designed to provide residents with modern outdoor spaces and improved community facilities.

The rehabilitation, which transformed a 1,133-square-meter area in Barangay Jesus Dela Peña, was a collaborative effort between the local government of Marikina and the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA).

The project was initiated following a proposal by Representative Marjorie Ann Teodoro to address the need for accessible green spaces in the city’s urban landscape.

The upgraded park features a variety of amenities, including new landscaping, concrete benches with roof sheds, and modern playsets for children. To promote health and wellness, the site also includes an outdoor gym. In a unique addition to the community space, the project incorporates a two-story burial chapel to serve the needs of local residents.

Marikina City Mayor Marcelino Teodoro, who spearheaded the opening, emphasized that the park is intended to be a sanctuary for families. “We aim to have this open space used by the people of Marikina to enjoy and relax with their families,” the Mayor said.

MMDA Chairman Don Artes highlighted the broader impact of the project, stating that the redevelopment of such parks is a key strategy in combating urban decay and mitigating the “urban heat island” effect. Artes noted that the agency remains committed to building and revitalizing open spaces throughout Metro Manila to provide safe and clean environments for public use.

The inauguration follows a series of recent infrastructure and environmental improvements in the city, including ongoing flood control measures and riverbank enhancements, as Marikina continues to focus on urban resilience and community-centered development.
