President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has reappointed former Supreme Court associate justice Jose Mendoza to the Judicial and Bar Council (JBC), the body responsible for screening judicial nominees.
Palace Press Officer Claire Castro confirmed the appointment in a text message to Palace reporters on Saturday.
Mendoza first joined the JBC in July 2025, but his ad interim appointment was deferred by the Commission on Appointments on October 7.
After passing the 1971 Bar Examinations, Mendoza worked as a legal officer for the Philippine Banking Corp., Manila Electric Company, and Gokongwei Group of Companies. He entered the judiciary as a research attorney at the Court of Appeals in 1977, advancing to judge and later CA justice.
Mendoza retired from the Supreme Court in August 2017 upon reaching 70 and served on the JBC under the Duterte administration starting October that year.
The JBC is constitutionally mandated to screen and vet nominees for presidential appointments to the judiciary, as well as the Offices of the Ombudsman and Deputy Ombudsman.
