President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has conferred the Order of Lakandula, Rank of Grand Cross (Bayani), on Chief Justice Alexander Gesmundo in recognition of his contributions to the Philippine justice system and years of public service.

The prestigious civilian distinction honors individuals who have rendered exceptional service to the country and contributed significantly to the welfare of the Filipino people.

The Grand Cross (Bayani) rank is among the highest distinctions under the Order of Lakandula and may be awarded to senior government officials, including the Vice President, Senate President, House Speaker, Chief Justice, ambassadors, and other high-ranking officials.

Gesmundo, the country’s 27th Chief Justice, is set to retire on November 6 upon reaching the mandatory retirement age of 70.

He has served as head of the Philippine judiciary since April 5, 2021, overseeing the Supreme Court and the country’s judicial system for more than five years.

His retirement will create a vacancy in the judiciary’s highest position, requiring the appointment of a new Chief Justice.

Malacañang said President Marcos is expected to announce Gesmundo’s successor within the week.

Under the Constitution, the President appoints the Chief Justice from a shortlist submitted by the Judicial and Bar Council (JBC).

The appointment will mark another leadership transition in the Supreme Court as the judiciary continues its efforts to improve access to justice and strengthen court operations.
