Manila deploys 160 trucks to clear nearly 1,000 tons of New Year’s Day trash

The Manila city government deployed 160 garbage trucks on Thursday to clear the massive volume of waste generated during the New Year’s Eve celebrations.

As of 8:00 a.m. on Jan. 1, the city’s Department of Public Services (DPS) and private contractor Leonel Waste Management reported a combined collection of 956 metric tons of garbage.

According to the local government unit (LGU), Leonel Waste Management dispatched 141 trucks and hauled 887 metric tons, while the DPS deployed 19 trucks to collect the remaining 69 metric tons.

City officials confirmed that “hauling and mopping operations” remain ongoing across all districts to manage the post-holiday debris.

In addition to general household and street waste, the DPS District IV Task Force was specifically tasked with clearing fire debris in Barangay 582, Zone 57, along Mindanao Street to ensure public safety.

The Manila Public Information Office has been releasing real-time updates and photos of the cleanup operations to keep residents informed as the city works to return to its normal state following the festivities
