Manila Mayor Francisco “Isko” Moreno declares the City of Manila under a state of health emergency after two more garbage contractors terminated their operations in the city.
“I opted to declare and request the city council tomorrow, the first session day, declare a state of health emergency in the entire city of Manila,” Moreno said in a press conference.
This was due to complaints from the people of Manila, who asked the Mayor to address the garbage situation in the city.
“For the past so many weeks, we’ve been receiving a lot of complaints and requests from the people of Manila to confront the garbage situation of the city,”
According to Moreno, PhilEco and MetroWaste, the two garbage collecting contractors, stopped their operations in the city due to unsettled payments since January.
Leonel, the former garbage contractor of the city, also put their operations to a halt for the same reason.
Moreno added that the city has amassed P950 million in unsettled payments to the three garbage contractors due to “financial mismanagement” of the past city administration.
The mayor assured his constituents that the local government would take over the trash collection in Manila.
