Manila-bound passenger was taken into custody at Daniel Z. Romualdez Airport after security personnel discovered 30 rounds of live .45-caliber ammunition and a magazine inside his backpack, police said.
The 59-year-old man was flagged during routine X-ray screening before boarding. Airport personnel then conducted a manual inspection, which confirmed the presence of the ammunition.
According to the PNP Aviation Security Group, the passenger could not produce documents authorizing him to possess the items.
Authorities subsequently placed him under custody for possible violation of Republic Act No. 10591, or the Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act.
The ammunition and magazine were secured and turned over to the appropriate police unit for documentation and further disposition.
PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said the incident showed why consistent screening at airports remains critical, particularly before passengers and baggage are allowed near aircraft.
Police did not immediately provide details on why the ammunition was in the passenger’s possession or whether additional charges would be pursued.
