Maine’s absence at Atayde family gathering sparks buzz, but Bayani Agbayani sets record straight

A simple family birthday video turned into online speculation after netizens noticed that Maine Mendoza was nowhere in sight during a celebration hosted by the Atayde family, prompting comedian Bayani Agbayani to eventually delete his TikTok post and address the questions himself.

The now-deleted clip showed the Ataydes gathered at home as they sang “Happy Birthday” to the family’s celebrants, Art Atayde and his daughter, Ria Atayde. In the video, Sylvia Sanchez was seen holding a cake beside her husband Art, while actor-politician Arjo Atayde also carried a cake as he stood near his mother. Their youngest son, Xavi, was also part of the intimate gathering, alongside Ria, her husband Zanjoe Marudo, and their baby.

What immediately caught the attention of viewers, however, was the absence of Maine, Arjo’s wife. The issue gained even more traction when Bayani’s TikTok upload suddenly disappeared, fueling more theories online and leading some social media users to wonder whether there was tension behind the scenes.

Bayani, however, quickly shut down the rumors. In a text message, he clarified that no one had asked him to remove the video and that the decision came entirely from him. According to the comedian, Maine was not at the gathering because she was ill.

He added that he chose to take down the post to avoid stirring unnecessary controversy, especially since the occasion was a private family event. His explanation suggested there was nothing more to the situation than a personal decision to respect the family’s privacy.

Still, the deleted video was enough to keep online speculation alive, with some netizens once again reading into a celebrity family moment that may have been far less dramatic than it appeared. The incident also echoed recent rumors involving other members of the Atayde family, including earlier talk that Ria Atayde and Zanjoe Marudo had supposedly split up—claims later disproven when Ria publicly attended the screening of Zanjoe’s series The Silent Noise on March 10 at Gateway Mall II in Cubao.

As for Maine and Arjo, the latest round of speculation has also revived familiar chatter from fans who continue to link Maine to former screen partner Alden Richards. But for now, there is no indication from Bayani’s account that Maine’s absence was anything more than a health-related skip from an otherwise private birthday celebration.

In the end, what began as a harmless family video became another example of how quickly social media can turn an ordinary absence into a full-blown issue. Until Maine or Arjo chooses to speak on it themselves, Bayani’s explanation remains the clearest answer: she was sick, and the gathering was private.
