Magnitude 6.4 quake jolts Davao Occidental, nearby Mindanao areas

MANILA – A magnitude 6.4 earthquake struck the waters off Balut Island in the municipality of Sarangani, Davao Occidental, at 4:07 p.m. on Thursday, October 8, with shaking felt across several areas in Mindanao, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS).

The agency said the earthquake was an aftershock of the magnitude 7.8 earthquake off Sarangani and the magnitude 6.5 earthquake off Davao Occidental recorded in June 2026.

Intensity IV was reported in Alabel and Malapatan, Sarangani; T’boli and Lake Sebu, South Cotabato; General Santos City; and Palimbang, Sultan Kudarat.

Intensity III was felt in Kidapawan City, Cotabato; Digos City and Matanao, Davao del Sur; Sarangani, Jose Abad Santos and Santa Maria, Davao Occidental; Maitum, Sarangani; Banga, South Cotabato; and Lebak, Sultan Kudarat.

Meanwhile, Intensity II was recorded in Carmen and President Roxas, Cotabato; Davao City; Magsaysay, Davao del Sur; Maasim, Sarangani; Santo Niño, Surallah and Norala, South Cotabato; and President Quirino, Esperanza, Kalamansig and Isulan, Sultan Kudarat.

Weaker shaking at Intensity I was reported in Kalilangan, Bukidnon; Banisilan, Magpet and Pikit, Cotabato; Nabunturan, Davao de Oro; and Tantangan, South Cotabato.

PHIVOLCS identified the latest tremor as part of the continuing aftershock activity associated with the two powerful offshore earthquakes that struck the region in June.

Residents in affected communities are advised to remain alert for possible aftershocks, inspect buildings for signs of damage and follow safety advisories from local disaster risk reduction and management offices.

Authorities have yet to provide confirmed reports of damage or injuries resulting from the latest earthquake.
