Magnitude 4.8 earthquake jolts waters off Davao Occidental

A magnitude 4.8 earthquake rattled the waters off the coast of the town of Malita in Davao Occidental province on Saturday morning, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) reported.  

The quake was recorded at approximately 8:00 a.m. local time, with its epicentre located some 0 km north-48° east of Malita, at 06.44° N, 125.64° E, and a depth of 199 kilometres, according to PHIVOLCS.  

There were no immediate reports of casualties or major damage in surrounding areas, and authorities are monitoring for potential aftershocks and other effects. 

Given the considerable depth of the tremor, strong surface shaking was not expected.

Local disaster-response units have been alerted and are on standby, as the region prone to seismic activity continues to watch for any further unusual events.
