LTFRB summons bus firm over Quezon City counterflow video

The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) has summoned San Jose Del Monte Transport Corp. after one of its buses was shown counterflowing in a viral video in Quezon City.

LTFRB Chairman Vigor Mendoza said the agency issued a show cause order against the company after netizens tagged the agency in posts carrying the video.

Mendoza credited the public for helping bring the incident to the agency’s attention, saying the LTFRB acted immediately after reviewing the footage.

The video showed a passenger bus on the Sapang Palay-NIA route moving into the opposite lane to overtake despite an oncoming vehicle.

The bus later returned to its lane, but the driver was heard arguing with the driver of the private vehicle.

In the show cause order, the LTFRB directed the company to explain in notarized writing why it should not be penalized for allegedly employing a reckless driver.

The company was also ordered to submit its driver training program and proof that it complied with the required extraordinary diligence for public utility vehicle operators.

A hearing was set on July 9, with the LTFRB warning the company of consequences if it failed to appear. Mendoza said road safety violations by public utility vehicle drivers were serious because they involved the safety of passengers, adding that more than 700 transport companies had already been issued show cause orders under the agency’s enforcement campaign.
