LTFRB sanctions 29 more substandard PUV terminals

The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) intensified its nationwide crackdown on substandard transport hubs this week, issuing Show Cause Orders and notices to comply to 29 additional bus and public utility vehicle (PUV) terminals.

The enforcement action, carried out under the direction of the Department of Transportation, aims to ensure that facility operators adhere to strict regulations regarding passenger safety and welfare.

LTFRB Chairperson Atty. Vigor D. Mendoza II characterized the move as part of a “new normal” for the industry, stating that regular, surprise inspections will continue indefinitely to instill discipline among operators.

This enforcement drive follows a directive from President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to prioritize the commuter experience and complements an upcoming policy designed to phase out dilapidated PUVs by blocking their franchise renewals.

Data from the agency’s recent sweep reveals a significant compliance gap across the country.

Out of 155 terminals inspected by regional personnel, 87 were found to be in violation of LTFRB standards.

Inspectors specifically looked for the presence of clean restrooms, weather-protected waiting areas, CCTV systems, fire extinguishers, and accessibility features for senior citizens and persons with disabilities.

The crackdown has been particularly active in Region 10, which saw 20 terminals flagged, followed by Metro Manila with 13 and Calabarzon with 12. Mendoza has instructed all regional directors to submit regular compliance reports and warned that the agency is prepared to shutter facilities that fail to address their deficiencies.

This follows the recent closure of a terminal in Iloilo, which was served a cease and desist order for gross violations of safety protocols.
