The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) met with mall terminal operators to discuss upgrading bus and public utility vehicle facilities to make commuting smoother for passengers.
The meeting, led by LTFRB Chairperson Atty. Vigor Mendoza with guidance from DOTr Secretary Giovanni Lopez, focused on enhancing comfort and accessibility, particularly for senior citizens and persons with disabilities.
Mendoza said the discussions were part of a broader effort to improve mobility for millions of Filipinos, following directives from President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.
The board emphasized encouraging private car owners to switch to public transportation, such as trains, buses, and jeepneys, to reduce traffic congestion and support sustainable commuting.
In line with this, the LTFRB has been inspecting terminals nationwide and issued over 100 show-cause orders and notices of violation to operators who failed to meet facility standards. Recently, two mall-based operators were cited for insufficient amenities for passengers.
Mendoza highlighted that many malls have become key transit points because of their proximity to train stations and bus hubs, allowing commuters to park their vehicles and transfer to public transport.
The LTFRB stressed that well-maintained terminal facilities are essential for promoting the use of public transportation, and officials are coordinating with mall operators to improve standards.
Operators who joined the discussion shared feedback and committed to complying with LTFRB rules, while Mendoza expressed confidence that these improvements will enhance the commuting experience nationwide.
