A village at the foot of Kanlaon Volcano has received a public address system aimed at improving emergency communication and speeding up the delivery of advisories to residents.
Barangay Cabagna-an in La Castellana was among the communities that received projects from the Department of Social Welfare and Development during the “Handog ng Pangulo: Serbisyong Sapat Para sa Lahat” activity on Monday.
The system is expected to serve 1,601 households, or 4,473 residents, by providing a more direct way to relay announcements, warnings and other urgent information.
Negros Occidental 5th District Rep. Emilio Bernardino Yulo said the equipment would help the barangay issue notices more quickly, particularly during emergencies.
The project was implemented under the KALAHI-CIDSS Kapangyarihan at Kaunlaran sa Barangay Community-Driven Development program, which supports small-scale projects identified and planned with community participation.
The DSWD-Negros Island Region said the PA system would help residents receive timely public advisories, emergency alerts and safety information, especially during disasters and situations requiring immediate coordination.
The agency said the project was designed not only to improve the reach of announcements but also to help communities respond more effectively once critical information is received.
Barangay Cabagna-an’s location near Kanlaon makes reliable communication particularly important during volcanic unrest and other emergencies, when rapid dissemination of evacuation or safety instructions can be crucial.
