LAOAG CITY – Ilocos Norte has been recognized as one of the provinces in the country that have recovered from African swine fever (ASF), marking a significant milestone in efforts to protect and revive the local hog industry.
Provincial veterinarian Dr. Loida Valenzuela confirmed this on Wednesday as the recognition from the Department of Agriculture-Bureau of Animal Industry highlighted the province’s efforts to strengthen disease surveillance, implement biosecurity measures, and coordinate with concerned agencies and local government units to contain the spread of the deadly swine disease.
Valenzuela said the recovery is expected to boost confidence among hog raisers, encourage the gradual revival of swine production, and help restore livelihood opportunities for affected farmers and stakeholders in the livestock industry.
In previous years, ASF outbreaks have significantly affected the country’s hog industry, resulting in livestock losses and disruptions in pork production and supply.
The Provincial Veterinary Office underscored the importance of continued vigilance and cooperation of concerned livestock stakeholders to prevent the reintroduction and spread of the disease.
Local authorities and livestock stakeholders were encouraged to sustain farm biosecurity, regulate the movement of live pigs and pork products, and promptly report suspected cases.
“The province’s recognition as an ASF-recovered area signals a renewed hope for hog raisers and the local livestock industry. Let us continue to be vigilant to protect animal health and livelihood,” she said.
Other ASF-recovered provinces include Ilocos Sur, Bulacan, Rizal, Laguna, Quezon, Marinduque, Albay, Sorsogon, Antique, Guimaras, Easter Samar, Camiguin, and Lanao Del Norte. (PNA)
