Juan Luna’s ‘Una Bulaqueña’ returns to National Museum after Abu Dhabi exhibit

Portrait of a woman wearing a traditional Filipina dress with a white shawl, holding feathers, created by Juan Luna y Novicio in 1895.

Juan Luna’s celebrated 1895 painting Una Bulaqueña has returned to the National Museum of Fine Arts in Manila following a year-long exhibition at the Louvre Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates.

The painting’s homecoming coincided with the commemoration of Luna’s birth anniversary on October 25, 2026, marking another milestone in the preservation and promotion of Philippine cultural heritage.

Declared a National Cultural Treasure, Una Bulaqueña is among Luna’s notable masterpieces, depicting a Filipina dressed in traditional attire.

Completed in 1895, a year before the Philippine Revolution, the artwork showcases Luna’s mastery of portraiture through its limited color palette, vertical composition, and intricate details.

The painting features a woman wearing a traditional panuelo, holding a lace handkerchief and a closed fan. Its carefully arranged composition highlights the subject’s elegance and the distinctive characteristics of traditional Filipina fashion.

The artwork’s exhibition at the Louvre Abu Dhabi provided an opportunity to introduce Philippine artistic heritage to an international audience.

Visitors can now view Una Bulaqueña at Gallery VI, the Far East Bank and Trust Company–Andres and Grace Luna de San Pedro Memorial Hall, inside the National Museum of Fine Arts.

The museum is open to visitors from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
