Over 1,700 join tsunami preparedness run in Pasay City

A large crowd of participants gathered at night for a running event promoting tsunami awareness and safety, holding signs that read 'TSUNAMI! FOR SAFETY.'

More than 1,700 participants joined the “Tsunami! Run for Safety” advocacy event at SM Mall of Asia in Pasay City on Saturday, October 24, 2026, to raise public awareness about tsunami hazards and disaster preparedness.

The five-kilometer run was spearheaded by the Department of Science and Technology–Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (DOST-PHIVOLCS), in partnership with ARISE Philippines, SM Supermalls, the Pasay City Government, DOST-National Capital Region, and other organizations.

The initiative aimed to educate communities about the dangers of tsunamis while encouraging individuals and families to take proactive measures to protect themselves during emergencies.

DOST Secretary Renato Solidum Jr. emphasized the importance of recognizing tsunami warning signs, understanding potential threats, and following evacuation procedures to minimize casualties and damage.

Solidum reminded the public to immediately seek higher ground when natural warning signs appear, including strong or prolonged earthquakes and the sudden withdrawal of seawater.

He also urged communities to remain alert to official tsunami warnings, establish emergency preparedness plans, and familiarize themselves with safe evacuation routes.

The DOST chief further highlighted the need to strengthen disaster-resilient systems and promote the sharing of accurate information to improve community preparedness.

Organizers said the advocacy run served as a platform to encourage greater public participation in disaster risk reduction and promote a culture of preparedness, particularly in coastal communities vulnerable to tsunamis.

The activity underscored the importance of cooperation among government agencies, private organizations, and local communities in building resilience against natural hazards.

Through sustained public awareness campaigns and preparedness initiatives, DOST-PHIVOLCS aims to help Filipinos better understand tsunami risks and respond effectively during emergencies.
