Rookie standout Juan Gomez De Liano struck a hopeful tone despite another painful quarterfinal exit by the Converge FiberXers, insisting that the setback could ultimately strengthen the young franchise.
The FiberXers came within a breath of their first-ever PBA semifinal berth before absorbing a crushing 99–98 overtime loss to the Barangay Ginebra Kings in the Philippine Cup quarterfinals. Converge had the opportunity firmly in hand, only to see it slip away on a last-second three-pointer by Stephen Holt that stunned the team and its supporters.
Still, Gomez De Liano, the No. 2 overall pick in the Season 50 Draft, chose reflection over frustration in the aftermath.
“We’ll just have to keep our heads up and focus on the next conference,” he said. “This is a great experience for us and something that will make us stronger as a team.”
The rookie guard was nothing short of spectacular in the do-or-die encounter, pouring in 25 points and carrying the offense when it mattered most. Eighteen of those came in the fourth quarter and overtime, as he repeatedly answered Ginebra’s rallies and kept Converge within striking distance.
Yet even with a twice-to-beat advantage and Gomez De Liano’s breakout performance, a semifinal appearance remained elusive. The missed opportunity was not lost on the young star.
“We had unnecessary mistakes that could have been avoided,” he admitted, moments after Holt’s buzzer-beater sent Ginebra through to a semifinal showdown with defending champion San Miguel Beermen.
For Gomez De Liano, however, the sting of defeat is tempered by perspective. Rather than dwelling on what might have been, he views the experience as a critical step in Converge’s growth.
“It’s a good experience, and we’ve got to take the lessons learned,” he said. “It’s on to the next conference.”
While the result added another chapter of near-misses to Converge’s playoff history, the performance of its young core—led by an increasingly confident Gomez De Liano—offered a glimpse of a future that, despite the heartbreak, remains bright.
