Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and Vietnamese leader Le Minh Hung agreed to deepen cooperation on economic security, placing it at the center of bilateral ties during their meeting in Hanoi on Saturday.
Both sides also discussed Japan’s continued public and private sector support for Vietnam’s crude oil procurement, according to officials.
The two leaders agreed to strengthen collaboration on supply chain resilience, particularly for critical minerals such as rare earths.
They also endorsed priority cooperation areas covering science and technology, semiconductor research and development, artificial intelligence, and food and agriculture security.
A separate agreement outlined joint initiatives in digital transformation, disaster risk reduction, and water resource management.
The meeting resulted in the adoption of multiple documents detailing specific projects and areas for coordination between the two countries.
Japan and Vietnam have been steadily expanding security-related engagement in recent years, including higher-level “two-plus-two” talks involving foreign and defense officials.
Both governments said the latest discussions were aimed at reinforcing long-term stability and resilience in key strategic sectors.
