Japan’s Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi called on Iran and the United States to restart negotiations soon and work toward a final agreement to resolve their ongoing conflict.

The appeal was made during a phone conversation with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, which took place on Saturday while Motegi was in Kenya, according to Japan’s Foreign Ministry.

The call was reportedly initiated at Iran’s request.

During the discussion, Motegi urged Iran to demonstrate “maximum flexibility” in ongoing diplomatic efforts.

Araghchi, in turn, briefed the Japanese side on recent developments, including talks with the United States and broader regional dynamics.

Both officials agreed to maintain close communication moving forward, the ministry said.

Motegi also stressed the importance of ensuring free and safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz, which has been affected by heightened tensions in the region.

Japan said the matter remains a key concern given its reliance on stable maritime routes for energy and trade flows.
