The Japanese government is set to significantly increase its visa issuance fees and charges for foreign nationals applying to change or renew their residence status, according to official sources on Wednesday.
This marks the first fee hike of its kind in 48 years and is scheduled to be implemented starting in April 2026 as part of Japan’s upcoming comprehensive economic measures.
The revision aims to bring Japan’s fees more in line with those of other major countries, noting that the current 3,000 yen fee for a single-entry visa is substantially lower than comparable charges, such as the approximately 29,000 yen (USD185) for a US visa or the 16,000 yen (90 euros) for a European Union visa.
Government plans indicate that the increased revenue from the fee adjustments will be allocated to fund measures designed to address the challenges associated with overtourism. (Jiji Press)
