Iran seeks end to war, not ceasefire

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Iran is aiming for a full end to the ongoing conflict in the region rather than a temporary ceasefire.

He said any resolution should include assurances to prevent future attacks and provisions addressing damages sustained during the fighting.

Araghchi clarified that Iran’s recent contacts with the United States are limited to exchanges of messages and do not amount to formal negotiations.

He noted that communications have taken place either directly or through regional intermediaries, including messages relayed by US envoy Steve Witkoff.

According to Araghchi, these exchanges are coursed through the Foreign Ministry, with some coordination involving security agencies, but no talks are being held with any specific internal group.

He added that the process operates under the oversight of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council and follows an official government framework.

Araghchi also denied reports that Tehran had responded to multiple proposals from Washington, saying no proposals or conditions have been submitted by Iran so far.

On maritime security, he said the Strait of Hormuz remains open, but access could be restricted for parties involved in hostilities against Iran, while safe passage is maintained for vessels from countries considered friendly.
