Iranian officials expressed support for Pope Leo XIV after his remarks condemning the war involving the United States and Israel, saying his position resonated widely amid escalating tensions.
Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf praised the pope’s statements, describing them as a strong stand against violence and war crimes.
In a post on X, Qalibaf said the pontiff’s message encouraged those opposing silence over civilian deaths and “inspired millions” around the world.
He also commended the pope’s leadership, saying it provided moral encouragement during a period of heightened conflict.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian earlier also defended the pope, rejecting criticism directed at him and calling for respect toward religious figures.
The Iranian Foreign Ministry likewise condemned recent remarks made against the pope, framing his appeals for peace as aligned with humanitarian values.
The statements from Iranian officials came after US President Donald Trump criticized the pope over his comments on international conflicts and foreign policy.
The exchange highlighted growing diplomatic and rhetorical tensions involving Iran, the United States, and religious leadership amid ongoing regional unrest.
