The Philippine Space Administration (PhilSA) and the National Irrigation Administration (NIA) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to apply space technology in improving the country’s irrigation systems and water resource management.

According to PhilSA ad interim Director General Gay Jane Perez, the agreement sets the stage for using satellite data and analytics to support planning, development and monitoring of irrigation systems for proactive and real-time management of water resources.

The MoU was signed by Perez and NIA administrator Eduardo ‘Eddie’ Guillen, who explained that under the partnership with PhilSA, they will collaborate on research, development, and utilization of satellite data and training to strengthen technical capacity within the NIA.
