Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla has confirmed his intention to submit his courtesy resignation today, aligning with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s directive for all Cabinet secretaries to resign. This move is part of a comprehensive government reset following the administration’s underwhelming performance in the recent midterm elections.
President Marcos described the initiative as a “bold reset” to realign the government’s priorities with public expectations. The midterm elections were seen as a referendum on his leadership, with results indicating a decline in support for his allies and a surge in backing for Vice President Sara Duterte’s camp.
Marcos emphasized the need for performance, alignment, and urgency over political considerations, stating, “The people have spoken, and they expect results—not politics, not excuses.”
Remulla, who assumed the role of Interior Secretary in October 2024, previously served as the governor of Cavite for over a decade.
During his tenure at the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG), he prioritized reforms aimed at depoliticizing the Philippine National Police (PNP), advocating for a merit-based promotion system and addressing the organization’s top-heavy structure by proposing reducing the number of police generals.
Remulla took a firm stance against illegal operations, including the closure of Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGOs), even those previously associated with his family. He pledged to oversee the shutdown of these establishments, signaling his commitment to eradicating unlawful activities.
As the political landscape shifts, Remulla’s potential departure from the Cabinet could have implications for the administration’s reform agenda, particularly concerning local governance and law enforcement.
His resignation and those of other cabinet members allow President Marcos to reassess and restructure his team to better address the nation’s challenges and public expectations.
