The death toll from flooding in Assam, northeastern India, climbed to 82, the state disaster management authority said late Friday.

More than 1.1 million people across the state were affected by the floods, according to local officials.

Authorities said relief camps and distribution centers continued operating for displaced and affected families.

Restoration work was also underway in communities where floodwaters had begun to recede.

The Assam State Disaster Management Authority said conditions were gradually improving in several areas.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the state government would conduct a comprehensive assessment of the damage.

He added that officials would hold discussions with insurance companies to help reduce the financial burden on affected residents.

The government has yet to release a full estimate of losses to homes, crops, roads and other infrastructure.
