At least 46 people have died in Japan as heavy snow continues to affect the country, authorities reported Tuesday, with officials urging residents to exercise caution during snow removal.

The Fire and Disaster Management Agency said snow-related fatalities have occurred in 10 of Japan’s 47 prefectures, primarily along the Sea of Japan coast. Niigata recorded the highest number of deaths at 17.

In addition to the fatalities, 193 people were seriously injured and 365 sustained minor injuries due to the severe weather. One home was completely destroyed, while two others were partially damaged.

In Sapporo, Hokkaido, an 81-year-old man died after being buried in snow on his property on February 4. Local police said he likely fell while clearing snow from his roof.

A similar incident occurred in Kawanishi, Yamagata Prefecture, where a man in his 70s was found trapped under snow near the eaves of his house and later died. Authorities suspect he was struck by falling snow from the roof.

Officials have repeatedly warned residents to take precautions while shoveling snow or clearing rooftops, particularly the elderly, who remain most vulnerable to accidents.

Communities continue to deal with heavy snow accumulation, with local authorities coordinating relief and cleanup operations to prevent further casualties and damage.
